More needs to be done to breathe fresh life into Norfolk’s high streets – that’s the overwhelming result of a new survey revealing that ever more shoppers are turning to supermarkets and out-of-town destinations to buy their food and goods.

EDP reporters took to the high streets of 10 market towns as well as Norwich city centre to discover how they were faring in the current tight economic situation.

And while many shops are thriving, shoppers and shopkeepers agreed that action needs to be taken to keep them alive.

Shoppers called for:

More free parking
More variety
Cleaner town centres

Shopkeepers called for:

Lower business rates
Cheaper rents
Free parking

Findings show that 90pc of people in Norfolk and north Suffolk go to the supermarket for their food and goods but two thirds of people are proud of their town and city centre and would shop locally if enough was provided in the high street.

Meanwhile shopkeepers are struggling with rising costs, the VAT increase – from 17.5pc to 20pc at the beginning of this year – and the fact that people are not spending as much as they used to.

Out of 105 shopkeepers surveyed, 90pc said the government did not do enough to support small independent shops.

Nationally a new report has suggested that a quarter of high streets in the UK are failing as a gap grows between the best and worst town centres. Empty shops have triggered a downward spiral on high streets in 83 out of 365 towns, according to property consultants Colliers International.

The government has enlisted the help of TV’s “Queen of Shops” Mary Portas to revive Britain’s high streets. But while 40pc of Norfolk and north Suffolk shops are feeling the pinch, more than two thirds would still recommend opening a small store to someone else and there are very few empty shops in the counties’ market towns.

Anthony Warren, co-owner of The Gold Shop in St Nicholas Street, Diss, said: “I always say ‘do something for yourself’ and it’s always worth giving something a go but the main problem is the rates.

“A lot of shops are not owned by local people but by London firms who do not come to Diss.

“People who can afford the rent and rates are the chains and the big companies. If measures came in to help independent businesses you will see the town starting to look like it used to be. I know people who come to Diss who don’t live here any more and are shocked to see the way it looks today.”

Bob White, from the Showcase Gallery in North Walsham, said: “Town and district councils should do more. In particular there should be action on the appearance of empty shops. Owners of empty shops should be liable to pay rates pro rata.”

The EDP survey marks the start of a five-day series, looking at the main issues shopkeepers are facing, whether or not our town centres are becoming “clone towns” and what can be done to help shoppers and shopkeepers.

The research was carried out in Beccles, Diss, Dereham, Downham Market, Fakenham, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, North Walsham, Norwich, Stalham and Watton

End of an Era

Over the past few months we have had to make some heartrending decisions.

One of those decisions was to reduce Staff, this is the last week of a very valued member of Staff Susanne Durston, who has served us very faithfully for many years.

Susanne started working for Jacksons in March 1984 27 years ago.

Over the years her hours may have changed, her duties may have changed but she has remained faithful and loyal during this time.

Luckily she is moving onto another Job.

It was difficult to know what momento to give Susanne we eventually settled on a

Plea for Investment 2011

Hunstanton traders have written to King's Lynn and West Norfolk council leaders, setting out their fears for the future of businesses in the resort.

Debbie Ward and Dawn Davies, directors of Jackson shoe shop, warn: "If action is not taken now, Hunstanton will be nothing more than a ghost town with a sea view."

The letter is taken up by today's Lynn News, with Kevan Fleming who runs Legge's Menswear warning without investment, Hunstanton could decline into a town which only trades in the summer.

It's hard to see how a seaside town of Hunstanton's size is ever going to be anything other than seasonal, regardless who takes over Woolworths' former store on the High Street.

If the Princess Theatre does become a summer-only venue, people from the surrounding area will have one less reason to visit.

There are regeneration masterplans and other schemes afoot. But none address the basic problem of how to extend the season - probably because it's almost impossible to see how you could.

The people understand but the government and local authorities are carrying on as if nothing has changed. business rates, car parking charges, rents etc all need looking at with a view to freeze or reduce. The government is still spending a fortune on tv adverts for example. leaflets from local authorities. there is just so much waste that should be cut out and the saving used to start paying off debt and return money to the people. My husband and myself are looking to move to the area as we want to live near the sea and have a quieter pace of life, that said, we (i am 47 and my husband is 49) are not ready for 'cocoon' just yet!I don't think that having some younger entertainment necessarily has to mean people 'vomiting in the streets' every weekend. A place without a good mix of ages can be very soul-less and i love to see children and young adults enjoying themselves. I don't think that having teenagers counting the days until they are old enough to move away from their home because it is so boring is good for anybody and i'm quite sure that is probably what happens in Hunstanton. Shop-wise, i have noticed several 'pound-shop' type establishments in the town and not much in the way of fashion, shabby-chic, unique or any other superlative that would make for a bigger influx of shoppers and visitors - i DO agree that a farmers market would be an excellent thing to have.If we do move to the area, my 18 year old daughter will be moving with us and i would hate to think that she would be driven away by boredom within 6 months. I am sure she would have some good ideas about how to inject a bit of life - maybe a coffee shop that opens in the evenings, serving tapas or pizza, with up-to-date music (live or recorded), a place where younger adults could hang out. A comedy club, maybe at the Princess theatre (if it is open). I'm sure there are lots of improvements that could be made to the town without it losing it's victorian charm.

Janets Last Day

Today was a sad day, it was Janet Lawrence's Last Day at work, luckily she had got a new job at Rose-Fitt Guest House, with more hours and better times for her.

We gave her a Good Luck card with a 4 leaf clover and a wall plaque with the motto How can one pound of chocolate make you gain 10lb, hopefully she will smile and think of us when she sees it.

Janet started work with us on the 12th April 2010.

Janet had previously worked for us between the periods of 31st March 2003 - 15th April 2010? i am not sure of this date, it doesn't feel right!!

She was a very valuable member of staff who made us laugh what shall we do for a bit of light heartedness now?

On wondering what Jacksons could do for the Wedding Weekend the idea came up a Wedding Railway Carriage, well we had a railway entusiast so we had the expertise required, we hoped.

So it started and it turned in to a lot bigger job than expected, we started by commissioning a unique railway carriage, it is a Dapol Mark 3 Coach with Electra Railway Graphics Vinyl Overlay.

Below is Photo Progress Journal of the work undertaken.

The Royal Pavillion started with common garden table mat available from any cheap jack shop. Then drill in several 3mm diameter holes.

Then disguise with paint and a raised platform and walkway made from Balsa wood and painted red to represent a red carpet for the Bridal Couple.

Then the seats were made from natural hardwood and left unpainted each seat was individually handmade.

Then came the supports and working lights, and filling the pews with all the people, each person had to be glued on individually using a cocktail stick, then we ran out of seated people and had to cut the legs off standing people, which was most fiddly, time consuming it was! Not forgetting the handmade cross.

Then time to build the framework.

Then to add the Bridal Couple complete with photographers just hidden by the post

Then it was time to add the cover, green flock for the grass and bushes with people, and seats.

All though more scenes were planned time was not on our side, below is the finished layout. During the running session we alternated between the Wedding Train and a Wrexham and Shropshire Set,

St Crispin and St Crispianus

That two Roman saints and shoemakers, Crispin and Crispinian (or Crispianus), are said to have lived in Faversham late in the 3rd century is fairly well known, at least among people interested in the town’s history.

The association is recalled by a plaque on the ‘Swan’ in Market Street, which marks the spot where they are said to have lived.

However, the town cannot be said to be exactly incandescent with interest in this remarkable tradition, which anywhere else might be the source of great pride and the inspiration for annual festivities on 25 October, St Crispin’s Day.

There were three legends, not just one.

The first, first recorded, and elaborated, by Thomas Deloney in 1598, is the most coherent, colourful and interesting from a local point of view because it is set in Faversham, Canterbury and the unspecified location of a battle in France.

In the second, Faversham plays no part. The main setting is Soissons (Roman Noviodunum), a cathedral cityabout 20 miles west of Rheims in France.

The third is a variation of the second and includes a Faversham component. Originally it was probably a rather clumsy attempt to reconcile the second version with the first. It is this version which has come to be accepted in the town.

The first has been forgotten for more than 150 years, but it is, for Faversham, by far the most important. When local historian Arthur Percival read it, he realised that it was time to get into print again. This he has done with The Faversham Legends of Crispin & Crispianus, Princes and Saints, published by the Faversham Society.

Dr Percival said: “We could simply have published a transcript of the story as told in 1598 by Deloney, but the English, though quite racy, is not the English we use today, and might be a barrier to understanding and enjoyment. So what I have done is re-write it in contemporary English, retaining - at the risk of stylistic inconsistency - just a few of the more memorable passages and phrases from the original.

“The story is really quite fascinating and, if it embodies a folk tradition, as it probably does, may even shed a bit of light on the history of Roman Britain. It seems to be set in the time of Carausius, Britain’s ‘breakaway’ Roman emperor, who reigned from 286/7 to 293. In this version Crispin and Crispianus are the two young sons of a native British prince who has been executed by the emperor for stepping out of line. They are Christians, and, like the emperor himself, live in Canterbury.

“Their widowed mother realises that as they near manhood, their lives will be at risk not so much because of their faith as because they will be seen as a likely focus for discontent. She decides that for their own safety they need to disguise themselves and leave Canterbury. They set out on the Roman road to London (the present A2) and pause outside a shoemaker’s workshop in Faversham.

“The staff sound so cheerful and the atmosphere seems so congenial that they decide to ask for seven-year apprenticeships. Offered these, they settle down well and soon become champion shoe-makers. To tell any more of the story now would spoil it, but it is great fun, exciting, and has the happiest of endings.

“Though I tell the story exactly as Deloney told it, I have embroidered it here and there where knowledge of history has improved since he recorded it. For example he knew that the Roman Empire was in poor shape at the time, with barbarian invaders penetrating Italy itself as far as Ravenna. What he did not know was that Britain was then actually the safest part of the Empire and that as a result some Roman land-owners had fled here from France. Equally he did not know that on the outskirts of Faversham was probably a major military depot.”

And how did Deloney hear of the legend? He seems to have had no roots in Faversham. Not much is known about him except that he was a silk-weaver, who was born in about 1543 and died in 1600. He did have good colloquial French, and may have been a member of one of the thousands of Huguenot refugee families which settled in England in the later 16th century.

His surname is almost certainly an Anglicisation of the French Delaune. The Delaunes soon became prominent in London and one of them, Gideon Delaune (1565-1659) formulated a patent medicine which made him a fortune. Some of this he used to buy himself a big country house - Sharsted Court at Doddington, near Faversham.

Dr Percival speculates that if Thomas Deloney and Gideon Delaune were related, Thomas may have picked up the Faversham legend of Crispin and Crispianus while staying at Sharsted.

The other two versions of the legend are also printed in this new book, the second (Soissons) version in a few paragraphs, and the third, hybrid, version, in the late Leslie Smith’s masterly reconstruction from his delightful Stories of Faversham, privately published in 1974.

The first (Deloney) version provided inspiration for two Elizabethan plays, as Arthur notes. Dekker’s The Shoemaker’s Holiday, first produced in 1599 and performed before Queen Elizabeth I a year later, is still in the repertory. William Rowley’s A Shoemaker A Gentleman, first performed in 1600, and considered the better play in its day, follows Deloney’s story more closely than the Dekker drama. It is set wholly in Faversham, Canterbury and France. Probably it was performed in Faversham, since the town was on all the big acting companies’ circuit in Elizabethan and Jacobean times. However, it has not been performed in the town for at least 250 years and may be ripe for revival.

How to Celebrate St Crispins Day

Crispin was a nobly born Roman who, along with his brother Crispinius, became a missionary to Gaul. They took up the cobbler's trade so the faithful wouldn't have to support them - or, depending on the version you read - so they could give shoes to the poor. Crispin and Crispinius were martyred around 256, and over the years their stomping grounds became popular shrines. St. Crispin's Feast Day is October 25.

Shoemaking is a traditional handicraft profession, which has now been largely superseded by industrial manufacture of footwear.

Shoemakers or cordwainers (cobblers being, historically, those that repair shoes) may produce a range of footwear items, including shoes, boots, sandals, clogs and moccasins. Such items are generally made of leather, wood, rubber, plastic, jute or other plant material, and often consist of multiple parts for better durability of the sole, stitched to a leather upper.

Most shoemakers use a last—made traditionally of iron or wood, but now often of plastic— on which to form the shoe. Some lasts are straight, while curved lasts come in pairs: one for left shoes, the other for right shoes.

Some types of ancient and traditionally-made shoes include:

Moccasins: simple shoes, often without the durability of joined shoes (although different types of leather have different wear characteristics).

Chefs and cooks sometimes use the term "shoemaker" as an insult, implying that the chef in question has made his food as tough as shoe leather.

Not the best footwear for healthy feet

Sunny weather draws many people to the staple of summer footwear - the flip flop.

They are easy to wear and let your feet bask in the sunshine, and it feels like being on a beach.

But is wearing flip-flops good for your feet?

Amanda Lau, a sports podiatrist at Pure Sports Medicine in London, says that flip-flop season is a busy time of year, because they can cause several injuries.

Flip-flops provide minimal cushioning and minimal support for the feet. While they are suitable for a stroll on a sandy beach, they do not give the body adequate shock absorption on when walking on city tarmac.

With a maximum of 1cm between your foot and the ground, flip-flop wearers often adjust their gait - for the worse.

Flat flip-flops have no arch support, which can cause the foot to roll inwards.

People also tend to clench their toes to keep the flip-flop on their foot. This can cause the connective tissue which runs along the foot from the heel to the base of the toes, - the plantar fascia - to become stretched and inflammed, leading to foot and heel pain.

If you are used to wearing shoes with heels, swapping to dead flat flip-flops can also cause problems, as it stretches the Achilles tendon and calf muscles leading to heel and leg pain.

Because their design encourages the overuse of the wrong muscles in order to keep the flip flops on, wearing them for long periods can also lead to:

Shin pain
Overuse of metatarsals (the long bones that end in your toes)
Intrinsic muscle strain
Arch pain
Heel bruising
Poor gait patterns due to muscle fatigue

There is also the health risk of keeping your feet exposed.

If you walk with flip flops in tall grass, you may expose your skin to insect bites including ticks, which can transmit Lyme disease, a bacterial infection.

Late spring, early summer and autumn are peak times for tick bites and coincide with people venturing into the great outdoors in the warmer weather.

Similarly, exposed feet are more likely to suffer an injury when gardening or doing DIY work, and can even cause accidents if worn when cycling or driving.

One Foot Off and One Foot on Dawn went out to serve a lady who was in an electric wheelchair, on asking if he could help her she took off her leg and gave it Dawn and said a pair of shoes to fit this please, the customer had two artificial legs, needless to say Dawn went a bit green, and her face was a picture. How do you try a shoe on an artificial foot, that has no flexibility, it turned out to be not as bad as she envisaged.

The Brown Shoe Saga A lady came into the shop and Ken went to serve her, she said to Ken. “You’ve got a brown shoe in the window” Ken responded in his unique form “We haven’t” The lady was quite flustered and didn’t quite know how to respond Ken said “This is terrible” “You better show me, someone’ll get the sack for this”

In ugly Grandma shoes

For I knew, when I grew old

I’d think of that from time to time
It seemed like such bad news.
I never was a rebel,
I wore saddle shoes to school,
And next came ballerinas
then the sandals pretty cool.

And then came spikes with pointed toes,
Then platforms, very tall,
As each new fashion came alone

The kind that Grandma’s wear.

Our kids grew up and left

On Saturday 25th of October 2008, Jacksons the shoe people celebrated 70 years in business by having a day of 1940's memorabilia and nostalgia.

The customers were treated to a glass of ginger beer, cake and some old fashioned sweets and 1940's music. Jowett Flying Fox named 'PLUG' was parked outside, kindly loaned for the day by Stuart Grant, drawing lots of admiring glances from passers by.

Me and Debbie and staff were dressed in 1940's costume and Kira provided an authentic shoe shine service and raised £55.87 for Children in Need.

We had a prize draw for anyone born in 1938 and they won a visit to our chiropodist and a pair of shoes upto £50.

At St Edmunds Flower Festival, the Civic Society had pictures of Hunstanton Past and Present, they had a picture of Jacksons, with the same shop in 1970, when it was Easters Electrical Shop, which must have been just before Wheelers took it over, i would think.

In 1983, Jackson’s moved to it’s present location in Hunstanton, Norfolk, as it was felt we had outgrown the King’s Lynn shop. The business continued to thrive.

The business was still run by Mavis and Ken and other members of the family and in 1984 they were joined by Susanne.

In 1997 Jacksons celebrated it's Golden and Silver Anniversary in one year.

50 years in Business, 25 of them in Norfolk.

In 1998, after 40 yrs in the business without having a full weeks holiday, Mavis and Ken decided to retire. Their daughters Dawn (Me) and Debbie then took over the business.

On March 30th 2004 Susanne Celebrated 20 years working at Jacksons.

July 1st 1972 saw the opening of the King’s Lynn Shop in Chapel Street, by now George and Kate Jackson had completely retired, so the business was run solely by their daughter Mavis and husband Ken. By offering the same friendly service and value for money it was as popular in Norfolk as it was in Leicester.

The shop was started in 1938 when my Grandad George Jackson opened a Shoe Repairers in Front Street, Birstall, Leicester. It is believed the shop closed for a short while during the war years.

After the war George started making sandals from plastic strips with wooden wedge heels, in pretty colours, which were popular after the dull days of the war.

And then in 1947 a shop was opened in Conduit Street, Leicester.

Later opening a larger shop also in Conduit Street.

Around this time George also began selling Wide Fitting Glace Kid Shoes.

The retail side of the business continued to grow and was expanded into family footwear, including the famous Tuf brand.

It was during the 20+ years here that George Senior was joined by other family members.

George’s son George Junior and his wife Jill, opened a shop in Narbrough Road, Leicester in the late 1960's, this closed in the mid 1980's.

Another shop was opened in Cavendish Road, Leicester and was ran by George’s Wife Kate, This was later taken over by their daughter Mavis and her husband Ken.
